Large north to south running mountain with little disturbance other than hiking trails for several miles. Mostly owned by the Monongahela National Forest. At the upper edge of the plot is a west facing cliff overlooking the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River, Rt. 28, the Fore Knobs and Dolly Sods. The North Fork Mountain trail is located 30m east of the plot.;Linear community of Quercus prinus-Carya glabra/Deschampsia flexuosa-Calamagrostis porterii-Danthonia spicata woodland. Larger oaks are dying out, probably due to edaphic conditions. Open hot and dry with shallow soils subject to drying out. The trees become more abundant as you travel east away from the cliffs edge. The community runs parallel to the west facing cliff. There is an old campfire ring in the plot. There is an old fire scarred stump in the plot.
Representativeness
Large discontinuous patch of a deciduously wooded glade occuring on the east flank of a north to south running ridgeline. Plot was placed to sample signature of oak-hickory/grasses.
